The Initial Enrollment Period is the first and sometimes the only opportunity most people have to enroll in Medicare without penalties. It lasts seven months, beginning three months before the month you turn 65, including your birth month, and ending three months after.
It’s important to note that if you were born on the 1st of the month, your birth month is seen as the month prior. For example, if your birthday is June 1st, your birth month is seen as May. Therefore, your IEP starts at the beginning of February and concludes at the end of August.
The best time to enroll is during the first three months of your IEP. Missing this period without qualifying for a Special Enrollment Period often results in monthly lifetime penalties and potential gaps in coverage.
